Have you ever wondered what all those words on a light bulb mean? Watts, Lumens, Kelvins… and then there are 100’s of bulbs to choose from! We’re going to lay it out for you here today because it can make all the difference in how your space looks. It’s not just the light fixture that matters, it’s the bulb too.
So let’s cover the basics. Watts are the amount of power that the light bulb uses to produce illumination. A lumen is the measure of the brightness of the light bulb. Kelvins refer to the light sources coolness or warmth. The Kelvin rating on a light bulb or light fixture indicates the shade of white that is given off by the light source. The lower the number the cooler the color.

Keep these three things in mind when choosing a light bulb.
Now what type of light bulb to choose? Edison to silver dipped, there are tons out there to pick from.
Edison bulbs have a trendy aesthetic to them that look great when left exposed and offer a soft glow. All incandescent Edison bulbs produce a warm amber color. Unlike the LED Edison where you can get them with white or even cool white color, the incandescent vintage bulbs have a smaller range of warm color temperature. The brightness is usually about half or even less than half of what you would expect from a standard incandescent bulb with the same watts. They are not supposed to be used as the main light source for a room, bathroom, kitchen, or a dining room. They should be used as an accent, ambiance light.
Globe light bulbs diffuse the light producing a good amount of light with softness. They are great for exposed light fixtures.
There are a few vintage styles of bulbs that provide a warm, ambient glow, adding a fun style and that candlelight like effect. The Mini-T, Radio Style, Tubular and Antique are a few and they really come down to the look you are trying to achieve.
Silver dipped bulbs have a metallic coating. This type of light bulb is used to diffuse light by redirecting the emitted light back into the fixture and is often used in pendant light fixtures hanging above tables.
Then there is the regular old light bulb which is great to use when covered by a fixture.
The most eco friendly light bulbs are LED light bulbs which are an energy efficient design. Not only do LED lights consume less energy than other bulb types, they last longer (about ten times more than regular incandescent lights), which means less materials used in manufacturing long-term.
The biggest thing to consider is the over all look you are going for and then narrow down the choices from there. If you need help we are always here to lend a hand. Putting holes in the walls for your photos and art can be intimidating. Often we walk into a home of someone that has recently moved (or not so recently moved) and they have yet to hang anything on the walls. They don’t know where or how to hang them or they are waiting for someone to help out.
Help has arrived! We’ve got you! In today’s blog we’re going to share a few tips and hacks to make sure your art and photos are hung perfectly every time.
The biggest tip that will never lead you astray is to hang the center of your photo at 57” from the floor. Now if you’re hanging something above a fireplace or cabinet… this tip may not work but in most cases it does. Many people tend to hang their pieces too high. 57” is average eye level and the center, sweet spot for your items. If you use this rule throughout your home it will add a cohesive look as well.
Now on to hanging the photo or art. Using tape or a pencil measure up 57” from the floor then find the center of your item. Next measure the distance from the wire, holes, clips or whatever is on the back of your picture and determine the extra bit you need to calculate in to make sure the art is hung in the right spot.
Are you still with me?
Ok now that we know where to hang the art, it’s time to put a hole in the wall. If the item is light there is no need to use drywall anchors but if it’s heavy and you are not going into a stud you may want to consider using them.
Here are a few hacks to find where to put the nail in the wall if the clips/holes… are not right in the center of the frame (as in most cases).
If you have holes on either side of your frame run a piece of tape across the back and mark the holes with a pen or nail. Then put this tape on your wall at the correct height and boom! Done! Perfect placement.
Another hack is to use toothpaste. Put a tiny dab of toothpaste where the hook needs to go and press the photo against the wall.
Use a level! If you have to put in more than one nail use a level to make sure it’s nice and straight.
If you’re hanging multiple photos or art together, like a gallery wall, hang your center photo first then work around it by hanging the other items.

Why are there so many different colors of white paint? There must be 100’s. It can be completely overwhelming to choose which white to go with. We have good news! The following tips are going to make it much easier to help pick the perfect white paint for your space. Plus we are going to share our go to white paint choices. Let’s dive in.
Whites can look grey, cream, purple, pink, brownish… why?!
There are many things that impact how white looks in your home. Natural light, artificial light, sight lines and other paint colors in the home just to name a few.
First off most whites aren’t true white (and you usually do not want true white as it’s too white). Most have an undertone from a hint of pink, purple or cream added to the can when mixed. Imagine the white that you choose being the lightest shade of the color that is added to the can. When you look at a paint swatch look at the very bottom, the darkest shade, that will give you an idea of the undertone of the white. But not all paint swatches have more than one color! I know, that makes it even harder!
So hopefully you know the undertone now. The next question to ask yourself is do you want a warm white or a cool white in your home? Do you want stark white and bright or warm and cozy?
Look at the room you are painting and notice if it gets direct sunlight or not. Rooms with direct sunlight will have warm natural hues. Rooms with no to little sunlight will have a more blue hue which will enhance any blue, grey or purple undertones. Quick way to decipher: not a lot of light = cool, a lot of light = warm. But this is not always true because other things in the room can make colors look cool or warm, like furniture.
Next thing is to test! Once you have chosen a few colors, test them out. Get a few samples or try these peel and stick paint swatches and put them on a few different walls so you can see how the natural and artificial light hit the wall color and at different times of day.

Warm White Colors – will bring in warm tones and are great for counteracting blue and cool spaces if you want to warm them up.

We are well into summer here in Nova Scotia with consistent warm temperatures and lots of sun. Unfortunately summer is short lived around here so it is so important to make every sunny day count. Today on the blog we are sharing how to uplevel your outdoor space to entertain, a space to relax and to create a spot you’ll want to be every moment you get.
Let’s bring the indoors, outdoors while we can!
Before we get to the fun decorating part you’ll want to spend some time doing the not so fun part if you haven’t already. Clean up your space. Maybe the deck needs some scraping and a fresh coat of paint. I know it’s the last thing you want to do but you’ll be so glad you took the time to do this part (or if you can hire it to be done). Most decks need to be freshened up every few years.
Next up think about what you’ll be doing in this space. Are you going to be laying back and reading a book? Will you have guests in your space? Will you be eating meals outdoors? Maybe all of the above! Choose furniture for the space that will hold up to the weather, accommodate the purpose and be comfortable yet stylish. If new furniture isn’t in the books this year and you have some older pieces you are no longer loving you can freshen them up, you could spray paint them (if it is the right type of material and you’re into DIY), or simply adding new cushions go a long way to hold you over for now.
Ok, we have the space cleaned up and furniture situated. Add an outdoor rug to define the space, add texture and design. There are so many options out there. We love the indoor/outdoor rugs from our showroom in Halifax, N.S. Lane and Co. because you can use them all year round. Bring them inside for your entries and high traffic areas in the off season. The rug should be large enough for the front legs of all furniture to be on it. Same rules for outdoor as indoor. Then add a few outdoor pillows to make the space comfortable and to soften the look. Can you picture it yet? Settling into this cozy space with your morning coffee and a book, pillows, maybe a blanket. It’s starting to come together.

Now you can add some décor. There are many items that you use inside that can be brought outside. For example vases, trays, baskets, some plants (or choose faux plants for no fuss). You can have a lot of fun with this part, incorporating your style and making the space special. These products may need to be brought in when the weather is not great but it will be worth it to bring them back and forth.
Our final and favorite way to uplevel your summer space is with lighting! Candles, string lights, a fire place, lanterns, patio heaters… There are so many simple ways to add warmth and set a lovely mood with lighting. Your outdoor fun does not have to end when the sun goes down. Keep it going with this perfect addition.

Are your bookshelves ready for an update? Not sure about what to do with them? Keep reading to learn 5 simple steps to style your bookshelves to make them look like a professional decorator was in your home.
Clear them off. Remove everything and get rid of items that you do not want to display. Wipe the shelves down with a damp cloth and get them ready to redecorate.
Alternate shapes and height. When placing items back on the shelves you’ll want to switch up the height and shapes of items. Avoid putting the same sized items next to each other. Books are a great way to add height. You can lay them flat in a stack or line them up with a cute book end. This will give you that Pinterest worthy look you are going for.
Add a pop of colour and different textures. Plants are a great addition to achieve this and if there is limited light in your space you can use fake ones and it will still look awesome.
Make it special. Frame a family photo, a map, postcards, any item that has meaning to you. We like the look of different sized frames, some with a matte and some without. This keeps the space interesting and will create great conversation pieces.
Leave some open space. You do not need to fill every surface of the shelf and you don’t want to. It will look cluttered and will over power the beautiful items you have on display.
